Lower Back Pain

Elan Wellness Center in Tampa, FL, wants all of our patients to perform at their best. When lower back pain strikes, even the simplest activities can be daunting.

Chiropractic treatment centers upon the theory that correct positioning of the spine and skeleton can reduce pain, promote the natural healing processes of the human body, and assist the patient in regaining better physical health and mental well-being. Because chiropractic medicine focuses on treating the spine and skeleton, consulting a chiropractor is a reasonable course of action if you suffer from lower back pain.

What Is Lower Back Pain?

Lower back pain can be either acute or chronic. Acute back pain is short-term pain, lasting a few days or weeks. It comes and goes on an occasional basis. Chronic back pain is defined as back pain lasting longer than 12 weeks. Lower back pain is one of the most common medical complaints and causes many patients to seek medical treatment. Perhaps as many as 85% of people seek medical or chiropractic treatment for back pain during their lifetimes.

Back pain has a variety of causes. Skeletal irregularities, spinal disc deformity or deterioration, muscle sprains and traumatic injuries can all lead to back pain.

How Does a Chiropractor Treat Back Pain?

Chiropractors use two basic techniques to treat lower back pain: chiropractic mobilization and chiropractic manipulation.

Chiropractic mobilization is the slow, or low-speed movement of muscles and joints. By doing movement and stretching exercises under the guidance of a chiropractor, the patient's body increases its range of motion over time. As with any regular exercise, the body strengthens, reducing muscle pain.

Chiropractic manipulation is the quick, or high-velocity manipulation of the patient's spine. The chiropractor uses his hands and arms to bring the patient's vertebrae into the correct alignment. Chiropractic manipulation has been extensively studied as a treatment for lower back pain and has been shown to be at least as effective as drugs or other forms of physical therapy. Including chiropractic care as part of a wide-ranging treatment strategy for back pain treatment can help reduce and alleviate symptoms among sufferers.

In addition to manipulation and mobilization, chiropractic treatment can include heat and cold treatments, exercise, massage, and dietary advice. All of these methods can help you attain better overall health in addition to helping you with the management of your back pain.
