In my early 20’s I was in a car accident where a drunk driver hit me from behind going 55mph when I was at a complete stop. That was the day that changed my life.
A long journey of the wrong kinds of therapy left me with a series of conditions but after I trusted my body to the workman’s comp doctors, I was left with big scars on my right hand and elbow from carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel release surgeries. Before they were able to operate on my left hand and elbow, I made a decision to seek holistic options to heal my body from the pain that I was experiencing. This journey brought me to study massage therapy and believe wholeheartedly in the power of hard and soft tissue manipulations. I receive chiropractic adjustments often as well as work on my soft tissues (fascia and muscles) and I no longer stress about my health.
My days are spent helping to heal those who chose to be receptive. I spend each day to the fullest, keeping myself focused on total life wellness. My way of thinking has allowed me to strengthen my personal journey: a wellness campaign that has inspired others to do the same.
My belief is, that the body has the innate ability to heal itself if given the proper nourishment and therapies. Each day is spent moving closer to wellness, and each day I am more well than the day before!
What Is Massage Therapy?
Referenced in medical textbooks, almost 4,000 years ago, massage therapy is one of the oldest recognized methods of healing. Even the “father of medicine”, Hippocrates, described massage therapy in the 4th century BC, writing: “the physician must be acquainted with many things, and assuredly with “rubbing” (massage).
Today, the term massage therapy refers to bodywork or somatic therapy. These employ a variety of manual manipulative techniques to relieve pain and discomfort in the muscles and soft tissue. The procedures involved may use the hands, forearms, elbows and even feet, and are applied either as fixed or movable pressure to the patient.
The techniques employed during a massage therapy session, including holding, vibration, rocking, friction, kneading and other forms of compression, are primarily performed using the hands. They benefit all systems of the body including the musculoskeletal, circulatory-lymphatic, nervous and other body systems. As a result, the goal of massage therapy is to positively influence the overall health and well-being of each client.
